Special Range

In 1978, the Post Office finally recognised that it couldn’t fight the market for ‘grey’ or unapproved designer telephones, so it decided to join in too. It launched a range of phones, many imported from overseas, to meet the demand for fashion and novelty phones.

The phone shown here is the Candlestick from STC, produced using a US body shell and UK components inside. It had no internal bell, though US versions did. Compared to the original Candlestick Tele 150, one can see the need for a larger base to house the transmission components. Pity about the curly cord!
